Mechanist Psalms
By Brother Vladmir Rutgar, Order of the Gear and Hammer

Hot is the Fire of the Foundry Forge

Hot is the fire of the foundry forge
And hard the hammer held aloft.
The iron knows not why
But never does it complain.
Found in the Forge-Father's furnace
Are we as iron, or are we dross?
Fate bemoaned, or future faced
When the flame flares and the hammer falls?

A Single Gear

A single gear in a great machine
Turns round and round and round
Yet never knows the purpose served
In the machine which it is found.
The second in a set of Gaea's religious poems I'm submitting. Well, second and third. These were actually written in Common, hence why there's no translator notes.
Anyway, the Order of the Gear and Hammer are a church that worship's the god of the Forge, Govan, who is also the dwarves' patron deity. The Mechanists' worship of Govan differs significantly from the dwarves' in a number of ways, but they still center around perfecting the self by perfecting a craft. The most critical difference is that, where dwarves view their craft as an extension of the soul - you learn who you are by creating works of beauty - with the Mechanists, they view learning about machines as learning about the nature of the world. You learn about your place in the grand order of the world by learning how gears and pistons work. You are a cog in a great machine and building machines helps you understand your purpose in the plan of the world.
Of course, that doesn't stop them from finding every way possible to profit from their inventions.
